Met Gala 2021 Recap: Channeling Old Hollywood

Met Gala 2021 Recap: Channeling Old Hollywood

It was fashion fanatics' favourite day of the year last night, the Met Gala. The dress code, chosen by Anna Wintour, was “American Independence” to introduce the exhibition ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’ at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Many designers and celebrities stepped onto the carpet in their interpretations of what fashion stands for in American culture, with an underlying theme of old Hollywood glamour. Although most of us watched from our couches lounging in baggy t-shirts and tights, that didn’t stop us from judging and rounding up our favourite looks for you!

Billie Eilish, co-chair of this year's Met Gala, had one of the most memorable moments when she arrived on the carpet in an Oscar de la Renta ball gown. The look was inspired by a true American fashion icon, Marilyn Monroe. Watching from home we all felt her feminine presence though the TV, Billie stated “It just was time. It was time for this, and I feel like I've grown so much in the last few years and my confidence.”

Her fellow co-chair Timothee Chalamet paid homage to Chuck Taylor in a look we can best describe as “When you are attending the Met Gala at 5pm but have baseball practice at 6pm.”

Lil Nas X made a big statement this year wearing not one, not two, but three showstopping Versace looks. He gave us major king of the Met Gala vibes in his gold cloak, suit of armor, and bedazzled jumpsuit.

Gemma Chan, who worked with designer Prabel Gurung, paid homage to Hollywood’s first Chinese-American star, Anna May Wong.

The belles of the ball Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid paid homage to old hollywood icons. Gigi expressed that her couture Prada gown look gave “a little nod to some ‘50s, ‘60s glamour” and Kendall wore a custom Givenchy gown inspired by Audrey Hupburn. Kendall was draped in barely there fabric and crystals, we can’t help but wonder-is she wearing a pair of Threads Sheer Ivory tights under her gown?

Yara Shahidi understood the assignment paying tribute to old Hollywood icon Josephine Baker in a custom made Dior beaded gown.

Megan The Stallion showing us ‘hot girl summer’ is a lifestyle-not just a season. Wearing a custom Coach gown inspired by 1940s old Hollywood slip dresses, Megan labeled herself as ‘Megan Monroe’ for the night.

And Rihanna. That’s all that needs to be said. It’s Rihanna.
